Cantine Fodera`
Marsala – Sicily
The history of this winery began in the mid-1800s , more precisely in 1849, when Matteo Foderà began to vinify the grapes of his vineyards in the family cellar in Contrada Giardinello. The wine obtained by him, and the four subsequent generations has been sold, for over a century, to the taverns of Trapani and to local companies that used it as a base for Marsala wine.
In 2001, winemaker Nino Foderà decided to launch the production of bottled wine for the first time. This marked the birth of the first 2700 bottles of Merlot. A wine of great structure that achieved excellent market feedback from its very first vintage. Few bottles from that adventurous year are still jealously kept in the cellar. Our family has grown between one cluster of grapes and another, inevitably succumbing to the charm of this world. For us, wine is territory, culture, hard work, joy, and sharing. It is history and it is the future.
Our vineyards are located in the northern area of Marsala, approximately 30 meters above sea level and 2.50 km from the Stagnone Nature Reserve. The medium-textured Mediterranean red soils where the vines thrive are characterized by a high percentage of iron and magnesium, excellent drainage characteristics, and moderate fertility. The Grillo, Syrah, Merlot, and Perricone vines in Contrada Giardinello, as well as the Zibibbo in Contrada Dara, grow in territories with high biodiversity, ecosystems maintaining excellent vital balances of microflora and microfauna.
The climate is mostly mild and temperate, with a constant: the wind. Predominantly Scirocco or Mistral, often of strong intensity, while the marine breezes are gentle and uninterrupted. This factor is a useful ally for natural vine defense as it reduces the possibility of certain parasites, ensuring an adequate level of humidity in the air that prevents dangerous mold growth from the flowering period onwards.
